How to find it! How to keep it alive! How to make it last! Finding love has become the pursuit that is supposed to heal our hearts and fill every ache within us.
The Human Love
The love we read about and hear about in the media is human love. We are born with it. Human love is the most beautiful flower the world has to offer, but it can hide a thorn, because it often causes heartaches, divorces, broken homes, and wrecked relationships.Nancy Missler describes human love by saying:
- Human love is conditional because it depends on us, how we feel, what our circumstances are, or how the other person responds to us.
- Human love is bondage because it puts the one loving in the bondage to expectations and forces the one being loved to respond from defenses rather than the heart.
- Human love is a self-centered love because it puts its own interests above the interest of others.
The Love of God
Contrary to human love stands God's love. Not everyone has experienced God's love but that does not change the truth that God's love is real and unconditional:- God's love is a gift. A gift that is poured into our hearts.
- God's love is one-sided because it doesn't have to be returned to be kept alive.
- God's Love is freeing because it frees the lover from expectations, allowing love to flow from heart and not from the defenses.
